Harry Powell (Richard Chamberlain) is a serial killer who seduces and then murders single women. His latest target is the widow Willa Harper (Diana Scarwid). Her husband robbed a bank and hid the money on their property before he was caught and executed, and Powell wants to find it. He marries Willa, hoping she'll know where the money is hidden. She doesn't, but her children, John (Reid Binion) and Pearl (Amy Bebout), do. And Harry will do anything to get that information out of them.
